Navy Sailors' Song from the Soviet film We are from Kronstadt, sheet music and lyrics, 1936.

Measures 9" x 12", 5 pp., published by the State Musical Publishing House, Moscow, circulation 10,000 copies, very small by Soviet standards. The front cover has a handwritten dedication "To Vera from Seryozha, 24 March 1936, Moscow." The sheet music is for vocals and piano.

In excellent condition, showing just minor storage wear to the covers. The artwork on the front cover as well as all the printed material inside are crisp and vibrant. The sheet with pp. 2-3 is a loose insert, there is no binding.

The printed header to the sheet music says that this song was dedicated to Mikhail Fomin, a Red Army commander. It also says that melodically, the song was based on an "old revolutionary sailors' song The Sea Was Groaning in Rage," however "old" a revolutionary song could have been in 1936. Kronstadt, a town and naval base on Kotlin Island just west of St. Petersburg, played an important role in the establishment of the Soviet Power in Russia - first as a significant force supporting the Bolshevik uprising in 1917, and barely four years after, as the place of the last major revolt against Bolshevik rule on Russian territory. Not surprisingly, the Soviet propaganda sang exalted praise to the former, and carefully obfuscated the latter.
