The artwork is dominated by a high 3-D bas-relief of the very rarely encountered early version of the State Emblem of the USSR with six scrolls. Among Russian collectors, this case is known as the State Seal of the USSR. Both sides show a silver hallmark "875" with a worker's head, the kind used from 1927 to 1954, and the maker's mark МГ.4 (MG.4). The maker's mark is struck poorly but is still recognizable. This maker is known for some of the most elaborate Soviet podstakanniki glass holders and cigarette cases in the late 1920s - early 1930s. The interior of the panels is gilded, and it appears that the inside of the bottom panel probably had an engraved inscription that was very carefully removed together with the gilt.

The case is in excellent condition. The artwork is well-preserved, having all of its sculptured details perfectly defined. The case is completely free of dents or significant dings. The cabochon closure button functions smoothly; the hinge is intact; the alignment of the two panels is perfect. The gilt finish on the interior is pale but clearly visible. The retaining strip appears to be original and preserved some of its elasticity. The outer surfaces are lightly and attractively patinated.

This case with the very rare early version of the Soviet State Emblem in such outstanding condition will be a gem of any collection of cigarette cases or early Soviet memorabilia.
