In very good condition. The poster shows minor creases and some wear to the margins including shallow tears. Longer tears have been repaired and reinforced with acid-free library tape on the verso. If desired, the smaller tears are equally repairable. The paper is somewhat brittle and requires care when manhandled. Framing the poster seems to be the best way to preserve it for many more years. The colors are fresh and vibrant, the text is completely legible.
The captions refer to the battles on the Vistula that took place during the October-November 1914 advance of the Russian Army into East Prussia. Brisant shells were introduced in the 19th century, and were used by almost all armies: British, German, Russian, Austrian, Japanese, etc. Filled with picric acid based high explosives such as lyddite, melinite, dynamite, etc., they possessed much stronger effect than fragmentation rounds filled with gunpowder. The shells were made of well-tempered steel. Upon detonation, the speed of expansion of these high explosives was such that the shards flew in every direction, killing more people than gunpowder-filled fragmentation rounds.
