Narkomat (People's Commissariat) of Foreign Affairs, Visor Hat of an Ambassador or Top Officer of the Soviet Diplomatic Corps, mid-1940s.

The crown is in napped black wool with metallic gold bullion piping and a black velvet band. Magnificent quality throughout. Features a characteristically compact crown and a small rounded visor. The cockade is in gilded brass, a 1943 model showing the state seal of the pre- 1947 model, with 11 scrolls representing the number of republics in the USSR. At the top of the crown is the Soviet Diplomatic Corps emblem of crossed pen quills in gilded brass. The chin cord is in gold filigree; the side buttons are in gilded brass and feature the 11-republic state emblem. The sweatband is fine light-brown leather. The liner in blue silk shows a stamped triangular logo of the Production Complex of the TsUM (Moscow's Central Department Store), USSR Narkomat of Trade. The liner is also marked Size 57 (approx. US 7 1/8 / Medium).

Very good to excellent condition. The hat is complete, with all the original parts present and without repairs. Both the crown and band are completely free of moth damage. The exterior is immaculately clean. The visor is intact and sound, although there is a modest amount of flaking to the lacquer on its top side, which is not too detractive. There is sweat staining to the liner affecting the manufacturer's logo, but nearly all of its lettering remains clearly legible. The sweatband shows only very light wear, with no tears; its leather remains pliable, not too dry. Overall, this is a beautifully preserved example of an exceptionally rare hat.
