Brass, enamels; medallion measures 32.1 mm wide. The obverse shows the USSR and Afghan national flags. The reverse has the writing "From the Grateful Afghan People" in Russian and Dari.

In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel is perfect, aside from a couple of tiny manufacturing imperfections. The gilt finish is well- preserved and bright; there is a minor amount of light tarnish on both sides that adds character. The screw post is full length and includes an original unmarked screw plate. The old, clearly original ribbon is well-preserved and sound.

The medal was instituted by the Communist government of Afghanistan and produced at the Soviet mint. It was issued to all Soviet servicemen upon completion of their tour of duty in Afghanistan.
