Afghanistan, Order of Fidelity, 4th cl. Star, Type 1, 1919-23.

In silver and bronze, 65.6 mm in height, 66.0 mm in width, weighs 63.3 g. The center medallion with Karakul hat and crossed sabers is encircled by an inscription in Arabic. The top ray of the star displays the numeral "4" in Arabic, denoting the class of the award. The reverse is plain, with a horizontal suspension bar.

In good to fine condition, overall presentable despite the small hole through the center. The center medallion, superimposed on the star was probably repaired: it is slightly turned clockwise, with the plume on the hat looking at 12:05 o'clock instead of straight up.

The Order of Fidelity (Nishan-I-Vafa) was founded in 1919 by King Amanu'llah as a reward for loyal service to himself during his accension to power. The center medallion was updated in 1923: in Type 2 the Karakul hat with sabers was replaced with a simple state coat of arms, which allows us to date this order accurately. The order became obsolete in 1929, however, some reports suggest that it was not officially discontinued until the coup in July 1973 which overthrew the Kingdom and established the Republic of Afghanistan.
