Peru, Order of Ayacucho, 2nd cl., Grand Officer Breast Star and Neck Badge with Ribbon.

The breast star. Silver gilt, enamels, 82.5 mm in height, 64.7 mm in width, weighs 148.4 g. The vertical arm of the cross shows a bust of Simon Bolivar, superimposed on the background of white enamel, with "REPUBLICA DEL PERU" above and "AYACUCHO 1824" below, in gold on red enamel. The reverse is in silver gilt, maker marked.

In very fine condition. The third from the right ray of the sun is bend down by just about a millimeter; the red enamel inside the number "8" has two tiny contact points; the white enamel around Bolivar's bust shows minuscule imperfections which appear to be incurred during manufacturing rather than a result of wear. There is a bit of oxidation to the bottom leaf of the wreath on the left side as well as on Bolivar's chin and collar. The reverse shows a couple of superficial scratches to the gilt and a couple of faint spots of tarnish. None of the wear is very obvious or detractive.

The neck badge. Silver gilt, enamels, 72.9 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 51.5 mm in width. Suspended from a flat loop connected to two jump rings. The obverse is designed identically with the breast star in everything but the inscription which says "REPUBLICA" above Bolivar's bust and "DEL PERU" below it. The vertical arm of the cross on the reverse shows the bust of Antonio Jose de Sucre, the Peruvian general and politician who led the Peruvian revolutionary forces in the Battle of Ayacucho, appointed as their general by Simon Bolivar.

Both sides of the badge are in very fine to excellent condition. Looking at the obverse, the second from the right ray of the sun is bent down by about a millimeter, barely noticeable. The high points on the bust of Antonio Jose de Sucre show minor wear to the gilt. A little tarnish can be seen on the horizontal arms of the cross, mostly on the reverse. The ribbon is 15.5" long, perfectly clean and wear-free.

The Order of Ayacucho (Orden Militar de Ayacucho) was established on 30 November 1944 in commemoration of the centennial of the Battle of Ayacucho, which led to establishing Peru's independence from Spain. It is awarded for exceptional merit or distinguished service in positions of command or for long periods, to military, republican guard, and civil guard personnel.
