Portrait of Stalin on a card, artist signed, 1944.
Measures 3 ¼" x 6 ½", printed on thin cardboard. The artwork is a print from Pyotr Vasilyev's 1944 full-length portrait of Stalin in overcoat with marshal's shoulder boards and insignia. The artist's hand signature and year, 1944, are seen in the lower right-hand corner of the image. For some reason, the caption under the artwork says "Generalissimus of the Soviet Union I.V. Stalin" even though neither the year nor the uniform match the caption. Stalin got this rank at the end of June 1945.
In very good condition. The image snows a bit of "snow": tiny cracks to the top layer of the paper. However, the "snow" is very light and is noticeable mostly against the dark background, not Stalin's figure. The lettering of the caption is crisp and perfectly legible. The decorative edges were not factory-made, but were done neatly and do not detract. This form of "sprucing up" home photos was very popular among amateur Soviet photographers, and add the air of a family photo to this card.
