Postcard Lenin at the Subbotnik in the Kremlin on 1 May 1920, artist signed, 1977.

The size is continental 6" x 4", unmailable without a cover, published by the Visual Arts Publishing House, Moscow, circulation 35,000, very small by Soviet standards. The artist's name, V. Ivanov, is printed in the lower left-hand corner on the verso. His hand signature is seen in the lower right-hand corner of the image. The artwork is an offset print of Ivanov's tempera-on-canvas painting, on exhibit in the Central Museum of Lenin.

In excellent condition, showing only microscopic corner bumps.

Lenin and the log have become the theme of numerous jokes, in large part as a reaction to the sycophantic flattery seen in all the artistic renditions of this event. Lenin did not invent subbotniks, it was an initiative of the workers of the Moskva-Sortirovochnaya railway depot to work for free on a weekend for the benefit of the new, bright, and shiny socialist Russia. Lenin saw the obvious benefits of this initiative and immediately became its strong proponent. On 1 May 1920, not the very first but the first All-Russian subbotnik took place in the Kremlin to clean up some debris. Lenin and the entire staff of the Soviet of People's Commissars came out to participate. There is only one original photo of Lenin and the log, included here for illustrative purposes. The great leader (right-most in the photo) can barely hold the end of the log. Since then, dozens of paintings and drawings have been made, depicting Lenin in a different position, or with a different log, with others on the wrong side of the log or alone, but never as it happened in reality because, in reality, Lenin looked puny and weak. In Ivanov's painting however, Lenin, wearing his signature worker's cap and gnarly hard worker's hands, is marching in front, lugging the log on his mighty shoulder.
