Postcard Fernan Magellan, artist identified on verso, 1979.
The size is continental 6" x 4", unmailable without a cover, published by the Visual Arts Publishing House, Moscow, circulation 155,000. The artist's name, P. Pavlinov, is printed at the bottom on the verso. The postcard is part of a set or series about world-famous seafarers and explorers. The artwork is an offset print of Pavlinov's watercolor, illustrating the moment in Magellan's journey when his ship was passing around the southern tip of South America. Seeing the signal bonfires the natives burned on the shore, Magellan christened this land "Terra Del Fuego." the Land of Fire, modern-day Terra Del Fuego Province of Argentina. A short summary of Magellan's famous round-the-world journey is printed on the verso. Note that we wrote Ferdinand Magellan's first name as "Fernan" because it is spelled this way on the postcard.
