Medal for Taking Warsaw by Storm, 1831.

State Munt issue in silver; measures 31.2 mm in height incl. eyelet, 26.0 mm in width; weighs 9.2 g. The obverse shows the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle with a smaller Polish Eagle placed upon its chest. There is a motto "Merit, Honor and Glory" along the upper edge. The raised inscription on the reverse reads "For Taking Warsaw by Storm, 25 and 26 Aug.1931".

The medal is in outstanding, excellent condition. The raised details of the artwork and lettering on both sides are essentially pristine: there is only a tiniest amount of wear to the high points of the eagle, practically unnoticeable to the naked eye. The original mint luster is beautifully preserved throughout. There are only some microscopic contact marks to the raised edge, no bumps or significant dings. Overall, a truly superb example, especially considering its age of nearly 200 years, and quite possibly, the best we've ever offered for sale.

The medal was awarded to all Russian troops as well as chaplains and medical personnel who participated in the storming of Warsaw. The battle that took place on 25-26 August 1831 (according to the old-style Julian calendar) concluded the campaign to crush the Poles unhappy with the new borders drawn by the Congress of Vienna and seeking a republican form of government. After the suppression of the rebellion, Russian authorities implemented harsh measures aimed at further incorporating Poland into the Russian Empire. During the same year Polish orders of the White Eagle and of St. Stanislaus were permanently brought into the system of Russian awards.
