DOSAAF Instructor Badge, circa 1960s issue.

Brass, enamels, lacquer. Measures 26.0 mm in height, 24.0 mm in width. There is a raised mint mark "MMD" (Moscow Mint) on the reverse. The trademark mint quality is evident in this piece.

Excellent condition. The enamel and lacquer finish are perfect and show a beautiful luster. The pin back attachment is fully functional.

The DOSAAF organization was formerly known as OSOAVIAKhIM, which changed its name and charter in 1951. The "volunteer society" was essentially a massive military training program, and although it collected dues from its members (most of whom had no choice but to join), it was sponsored and tightly controlled by the state. The official position and badge of the DOSAAF instructor were established in 1953. Many of the instructors were current or former military officers, some of them VIP retirees who got rewarded with sinecure positions in DOSAAF.
