Germany, Saxony, Civil Order of Merit, 2nd class Knight's Cross with Swords, Type 2, 1911-1918.
Silver gilt, enamels, measures 35.4 mm in height incl. eyelet, 35.2 mm in width, marked "G" on the edge of the bottom arm. Suspended on threaded 35-mm ribbon. The obverse center medallion is enameled in white and features the Saxon coat of arms in black and green enamels and with a crown on top. The medallion ring is inscribed 'FRIED. AUG. K. V. SACHSEN D. 7. JUN. 1815' ("Friedrich August King of Saxony on June 7, 1815") in gold letters. The reverse center medallion features the inscription 'FÜR VERDIENST UND TREUE' ("for merit and loyalty"), encircled by an oak leaf wreath in green enamel. The added two swords through the center signify an award for acts of bravery and exceptional merit in a military-like situation.
In excellent condition. The medallion shows no wear visible to the naked eye. The ribbon is exceptionally clean and wear-free.
The Saxon Civil Merit Order, aka the Civil Order of Saxony (original name "Zivil Verdienstorden") was instituted on 7 June 1815 by King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony, to be awarded to the royal subjects of the kingdom for distinguished civic service and virtue. The order was discontinued in 1918.
