The medallion is in silver, 30.3 mm in diameter, on a ribbon with a straight suspender and inscribed bar. The obverse has two characters on a central disk, circled by a wreath of cherry blossoms. The reverse is blank. In excellent condition.

The ribbon is most likely original, with the ends unstitched, the hook of the clasp present but misshapen, and the eye missing. The moiré silk is intact, and the ribbon can be repaired rather easily, if desired. Very fine condition.

The lapel pin is in the form of a bow tie, approx. 18 mm wide, attached to a steel pin. Very fine to excellent condition.

The case of issue is in black lacquered wood measuring 96 mm x 54 mm x 26 mm. Inside, the fitted pad is finished in plum colored velvet whereas the lid is lined with silk of the same color. The shiny finish on the lacquer is worn off on the lid but is nearly intact on the sides and bottom. The top part of the latch is missing.

The Medal of Honor was established on December 7, 1881, in six types, and was first awarded a year later. The dark blue ribbon was first awarded in 1919, bestowed for exceptionally generous financial contributions for the wellbeing of the public.
