Romania (RSR), Order of 23 August 1944, 4th class, RSR issue, with original fitted case of issue, 1967-89.
In silver-plated brass and enamels, three-piece construction (the center medallion and wreath are separate superimposed parts); 43.6 mm wide. Rounded silver sunburst has superimposed Rumanian state emblem and a wreath around it. Comes on a brass suspension device with moiré ribbon.
The issue case is wrapped in brown leatherette material and has name and class of the decoration impressed in gold: "Ordinul '23 AUGUST' cl. IV". The interior is lined in felt and has fitted nest for the award (to be stored with suspension folded underneath the medallion) and for the ribbon bar (which is not included).
The decoration is in excellent condition; bother sides are essentially pristine. The issue case is well preserved and sound, shows only very light wear to the exterior. There are a few minor marks to the felt liner, none of them really detractive.
The Order of the 23rd of August 1944 was established in 1959 in five classes. Initially, it was supposed to be bestowed only on the participants of the August 1944 coup-de-tat that resulted in Romania's switching sides in the war. Later, it was extended to include meritorious service in the military and outstanding labor or political achievements.
