Air Force officer dress dagger with leather-wrapped scabbard, dated 1951.
The quality is spectacular throughout, typical of Soviet daggers produced before the second half of 1950s (later, austerity measures and high production demands called for cutting some corners and using cheaper materials - such as varnish instead of gold plating on the brass parts).

The throat of the blade is maker marked "ZIK" and shows a 1951 date of manufacture. This is an extremely early date for a Soviet Air Force dagger: unlike the naval daggers, those for AF officers were only introduced in 1949. Moreover, the production sharply increased from year to year, thus making the earlier issues particularly scarce by comparison.

On the other side of the blade is engraved serial number "I- N210" (note the extremely low number.) The pommel displays the Soviet State Emblem of the style introduced in mid-1946, with 16 scrolls representing the number of republics in the Soviet Union. Attractive medium-toned Bakelite grip. The lower brass fittings of the scabbard have small Cyrillic maker marks "B" ("V") stamped near the rivets. There are two matching maker marks "B" stamped on the underside of the cross guard.

In outstanding, excellent condition. The leather wrapping of the scabbard shows no significant wear: there is just a single tiny scuff under the upper brass fitting and a few mild impressions on the leather, none of them really noticeable. The leather fully retains its beautiful healthy gloss. The gold finish of the fittings is bright and essentially perfect, free of the usual tarnish. The cross guard has a single small ding on the lower side and minimal wear along the far edges but that is neither really noticeable nor detractive. The brilliant blade shows only the slightest in-out wear, no nicks, pitting or scratches.

This is an all-around outstanding example, without a doubt one of the best Soviet Air Force daggers we've ever offered for sale - and also one of the earliest!
