Fiftieth Anniversary of the KGB, Table Medal in bronze.
Measures 60.0 mm wide; weighs 126.6 g. Obverse features artwork that consists of a sword, a sprig of laurel, and a large, stylized hammer and sickle; the lettering on the scroll is "50th Anniversary VchK-KGB". The reverse is plain, almost Spartan, displaying a shield with the dates "1917- 1967".
This table medal was intended exclusively for the top echelon of KBG leadership and members of the Central Committee of the CPSU (Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev was one of the recipients.) According to the reference book Commemorative [Table] Medals of the Soviet Period, 1919 - 1991 by A. Shkurko and A. Salykov, only 144 examples of it were ever produced, all struck in 1967 at the Leningrad Mint. From practical experience, the number quoted in the book seems to be too low and may be a typo, but the medal in any case is far more scarce than most other KGB commemoratives.
In excellent condition. The brass exhibits very attractive even patina and is free of the usual oxidation spots or significant blemishes. There are no visible edge knocks or bumps.
