Alexander III Coronation Medal, 1883.
In copper ("dark bronze"), 29.7 mm wide, weighs 15.5 g. Obverse shows portrait of the Emperor, with the inscription "Alexander III, By the Grace of God, Emperor and Autocrat of All Russia". This is a state mint version of the medal that features Cyrillic letters "ЛШР" ("L.Sh.R") near the edge on the obverse at 6 o'clock (initials of the die maker Leopold Shteinman and the first letter of the word "резал" - i.e "cut"). Reverse shows inscription "Crowned in Moscow on 15 May 1883".
In very fine to excellent condition. There is light wear to the high points of the bas-relief, but the details of the Emperor's portrait are still well-preserved and crisp. The lettering is perfectly crisp on both sides, and so is the imperial crown on the reverse. The medal is completely free of edge knocks or significant dings, shows only minor contact marks. There is a small blemish near the back of the emperor's neck which is not very detractive, while the copper has acquired a generally attractive uniform tone on both sides of the medal.
