Armored Corps officer service visor hat, circa late 1940s - early 50s.
In olive green napped wool with black velvet band and red piping. Features smaller early style crown and distinctive rectangular visor. Includes early WW2 type officer hat badge, a two-piece version in brass-plated steel and high quality enamel, with a separate superimposed hammer and sickle emblem. The liner has a rectangular manufacturing stamp that is mostly worn out and illegible; the only clearly discernable writing on it is "Size 57" (approx. US 7 1/8 - Medium). The format of the stamp leads us to believe that the hat is of early post-WW2 vintage, although it is otherwise identical or at least very close to what was produced during the war.
In outstanding, excellent condition - exceptionally rare to find for a hat of this type and period. There are none of the usual moth bites or trackings to the nap of the wool of the crown including its underside. The piping and velvet band are likewise perfect. The chin strap may have been replaced but it is of Soviet era and fits perfectly. The hat badge has one of its prongs partially broken, but the remaining prong provides perfectly firm attachment to the band. Both the interior and exterior of the hat are immaculately clean. There is only modest amount of wear to the visor and the edge of the brim. The original sweatband in ersatz leather is extremely well preserved showing only light wear.
Overall, a truly superb example of what is essentially a WW2 Soviet tanker's hat (but without the hefty price tag.)
