Shoulder Boards of a Navy Captain, 2nd Class, circa 1910s.
Four-sided sewn-in type, approx. 140 x 60 mm (5 ½" x 2 ¼") in gold tress with stars in silver bullion embroidery and black wool lining. Semi-soft cardboard interior. These boards could be worn on a Syurtuk long naval jacket, long greatcoat or ¾ length overcoat.
In very good to excellent condition. There is minor amount of verdigris to the gold tress material, some wear to the bullion stars, and minimal discoloration to the black stripes, but the shoulder straps are overall amazingly well-preserved for their age. The tress fabric is tightly attached to the backing. The black wool piping and backing show none of the usual moth bites or heavy wear. Interestingly, there is a remnant of what appears to be a fax seal or manufacturer label on the underside of one of the boards.
This matching pair of Russian Imperial Navy shoulder boards is a very rare find!
