Special Presentation Box for a Soviet award dagger, circa late 1950s- 1960s.
Beautifully age-toned hardwood case with nicely rounded edges, measuring 15¼" x 4½", approx. 1½ " deep. Plush velvet interior with shaped nest for the dagger. Features simplified, single latch construction of the lock and rounded pushbutton. Unlike similar presentation cases from the 70s or 80s, the housing of the locking mechanism is rectangular in shape rather than trapezoid, and does not have embellishment scrolls on the exterior. On the other hand, the rounded edges and the honey toned hardwood used are identical to the earlier issues from the md-50s. This leads us to believe that the case is a transitional type between the earliest model with rectangular push-button and two-latch locking mechanism. In all likelihood, it was crafted at some point between the late 1950s and mid-60s.
The box is in very good to excellent condition. There are minor scuffs and scratches to the lacquer from decades of normal use, not detractive to the overall appearance. The case is completely sound and free of cracks or dents. The interior is immaculately clean. Fully functioning pushbutton and lock.
This superb accessory to a Soviet "admiral's" award dagger is very rarely offered for sale.
