Deluxe leather-bound, gold stamped 1967 "Fiftieth Anniversary of the Great October Revolution" address book once belonging to Marshal of the Soviet Union Andrey Yeremenko.
Measures 7 x 10 cm. Extremely high quality red morocco leather cover, 80+ pages. Gold stamped on the cover (in Russian): "50 Years of October". Very fine to excellent condition. Shows daily use by Marshal Yeremenko, but no abuse.
Marshal Yeremenko received the most important decorations of the USSR: three Orders of Suvorov 1st Class, the Order of Kutuzov 1st Class, the Gold Star Medal of Hero of the Soviet Union, five Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and four Red Banners. He also received thirteen Soviet medals and twenty foreign awards. During World War 2, he held command positions on ten different fronts, including Moscow and Stalingrad. He received three wounds during the war, two of them serious enough that he spent long periods in hospital and frequently appeared in photographs using a cane. He helped liberate the Crimea, Latvia, Hungary and Czechoslovakia from the Germans.
During the Cold War, as a General of the Soviet Army, he held in succession the positions of Commander in Chief of the Carpathian Military District, Commander in Chief of the Western Siberian Military District, and Commander in Chief of the North Caucasus Military District before his promotion to Marshal of the Soviet Union in 1955.
Perusing this address book gives the holder a peek inside the mind and private life of one of the highest ranking officers in the Soviet Union. Separate from the phone numbers are his notes for a speech he was due to give; there is a memo to himself to find an appropriate quote from Karl Marx about extended struggle and his talking points re: "the need for educated cadres"..."35 million dead in the War"..."cannot define the quality of the people with math"..."Soviet warriors sacrificed themselves to save life on earth"...
Among the telephone numbers is contact information for: the head of the French Communist Party, Soviet Prime Minister Nikolai Bulganin, future Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev, Marshal Zhukov, Marshal Bagramian, Marshal Grechko's aide-de-camp, Boris Polevoy (cultural figure and author of "Story of a Real Man" about famous pilot Alexei Maresyev), and Ekaterina Furtseva (the infamous Soviet Minister of Culture). There are many other names here and it would be interesting to study this booklet to see who is mentioned and who is not: Marshal Konev, for example, is not, but Brezhnev's brother Yakov is (and in the future, Yakov would be the man to know if you wanted a favor!)
