Located in western Latvia, Liepaja (aka Libava or Lipawa) is a large port city on the Baltic Sea. On the eve of the Patriotic War, it served as in important Soviet submarine base. Its spirited defense against the Nazi juggernaut started on the first day of Barbarossa in June 1941 and lasted several days. Relatively few of the defenders survived the onslaught and the remainder of the war.
