Brass gilt, measures 30 mm wide. The reverse is inscribed with FUR VERDIENSTE UM DIE DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK ("For Service to the German Democratic Republic"). The original issue box is in plastic, lined inside with cardboard finished with ersatz short-nap velvet.
The medallion is in superb condition. The metal bar on the suspension with the years of the anniversary, 1949-1989, is missing but the numbers can be seen in the glue. The box is in excellent condition. The pin attachment is clean and fully functional.

The German Democratic Republic was officially created on 7 October 1949. The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989. This makes this medal one of, if not the last decoration of the socialist state of East Germany.
