Located in the historical Palais am Festungsgraben ("Palace on the Moat") erected in mid-1800s in Berlin's Mitte District and only slightly damaged in the Battle of Berlin, it was repaired by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany and used for various purposes, opening it to the public as the House of Soviet Culture ("Haus der Kultur der Sowietunion") in 1947. It continued to function, albeit under the slightly different name of House of German-Soviet Friendship, until Germany's reunification and the fall of the Soviet Union.
