Brass gilt, enamels. The medallion measures 52.6 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 36.1 mm in width, weighs 22.3 g. The gilded bar at the top of the suspension shows Roman numeral "I" for 1st class. The name of the order, BANNER DER ARBEIT, is in raised relief on the enameled banner.

In excellent condition. Tilting the medallion to reflect a bright light reveals a hairline and a few microscopic flakes to the enamel, virtually invisible at a normal viewing angle and without magnification.

The Banner of Labor (original name "Banner der Arbeit") was instituted on 4 August 1954 in one class. On 8 August 1974, it was divided into three classes. The 1st class was the highest, and each class included a cash award. The order was awarded to individuals and collectives for excellent and long-standing service in strengthening the GDR, especially for outstanding achievements in national economy.
