Badge in Commemoration of the Centenary of the Vilkans Match Factory (later, a part of the Furniers Plywood Goods Factory), Latvian SSR, 1978.
Brass, enamels; 26.5 mm tall x 22.2 mm wide. A very well-made piece in excellent condition.
Founded in 1878 in the city of Kuldiga, the Vulkans Match Factory was "nationalized" (i.e. stolen) immediately after the Soviet annexation of Latvia in 1940. In the immediate post-war years, the Kometa Match Factory took over its existing facilities. In 1957, its main building was repurposed as a workshop for the Furniers Plywood Factory specifically to manufacture cases for radios, including many popular Latvian-made models such as VEF, Rigonda-Mono, Rigonda-102 etc. In the 70s, it also

In 1957, its main building was repurposed as a workshop for the Furniers Plywood Factory specifically to manufacture cases for radios, including many popular Latvian-made models such as VEF, Rigonda-Mono, Rigonda-102 etc. In the 70s, it also got into production of a wide assortment of consumer products made of birch plywood, including children's toys such as rocking horses. The enterprise apparently exists to this day, now as a private company by the name of Troja, and specializes in manufacturing toys.
The badge stands out not only by its peculiar conical shape and nice quality, but also in its unusual reference to the original pre-WW2 name of the enterprise.
