FED-NKVD Rangefinder 35mm Camera S/N 121595 with Original FED 1:3,5/50 Lens, copy of Leica design, by Kharkov Dzerzhinsky Factory, 1940.
The camera measures approx. 5 ¼"(W) x 2 ¾"(H) x 1 ½"(D with the lens collapsed). Weighs a little over 1 lb. Manufactured by the Kharkov Felix Dzerzhinsky Factory, Ukraine. The original lens cap is lined with short-pile velvet on the inside. This is the first model which did not have the model number next to the FED trademark. There were several modifications of the first model. The engraving on the top part literally translates as "FED, NKVD-USSR, Kharkov Enterprise named after F.E.Dzerzhinsky." In terms of appearance, the camera is in very good to excellent condition. Besides the two tiny chipped pieces to the textured cover of the body, there are no dents or dings anywhere. If desired, a thorough cleaning should spruce up the looks of the camera considerably.
Mechanically, we could only perform a superficial test of the film advance knob, shutter release as well as aperture control and focusing ring of the lens. All tested mechanisms appeared to function properly. Visually, the shutter curtain appears to work but it has a small tear (see photo) and, possibly, needs replacement. When extended partially, the tube of the lens is a little wobbly.
The carrying case is original, in genuine leather, with the original leather shoulder strap, showing minimal scuffing to the outer layer of the leather. Unexpectedly little of the stitching is worn off, and only around the flat screw at the bottom that holds the camera in the case.
The first FED cameras were made by children, mostly orphans and homeless kids gathered into a colony near the city of Kharkov in Ukraine and led by the famous pedagogue Anton Makarenko. He managed to organize this very unruly and difficult crowd into a coherent team focused on productive work, education, and discipline. Details of the foundation and growth of this colony is described in Makarenko's book The Pedagogical Poem, a wonderful read that we strongly recommend.
Please note that the camera is offered purely as a collectible item, an ambiance piece, or a repair challenge for a connoisseur of vintage photo cameras. We can issue no warranty for its suitability for photography.
