In brass; the medallion measures 42.0 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 37.4 mm in width; weighs 17.0 g without the suspension and connecting link; overall weight with suspension is 25.7 g. The design is very similar to the Soviet Distinguished Military Service Medals. The medal was awarded to both Afghan and Soviet servicemen.
