Silver gilt, enamels, 50.6 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 45.3 mm in width, suspended from a threaded ribbon on a hallmarked link ring. The obverse center medallion presents a white-enameled Maltese cross over red-enameled background, encircled by a ring of white enamel inscribed MIL. The link ring has two hallmarks: one with just "925" for sterling silver, and a maker's mark starting with the letters "SS" followed by what looks like some numbers and a graphic mark. The ribbon is in moiré silk and has a safety pin sewed onto the back side as an improvised pin attachment.

In very fine to excellent condition. The gilt on the silver of the larger cross is slightly worn off, mostly on the obverse, and hardly noticeable at that. The enamels appear to be completely intact. The ribbon is perfectly clean and free of any wear or damage.

Established in 1920, the Knightly Order pro Merito Melitensi is awarded in recognition of activities that have brought honor and prestige on the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. It is mainly awarded to non-members of the Order and regardless of the awardee's religion, hence the awardees do not automatically become members of the Order of Malta.
