The tradition of the Estonian Song Festival, or "laulupidu" in Estonian, was born along with the so-called Estonian national awakening, the period in mid-19th century when Estonians acknowledged themselves as a nation deserving to be self-governed. The first song festival took place in Tartu in 1869, grew by orders of magnitude over the years, and continues to this day counting tens of thousands of performers. The highest recorded number of performers was in 2014 - 33,025 people.
