The Case of Issue is in wood, wrapped in leatherette on the outside. Made by Garrard & Co., Ltd., London. The fitted space inside is lined with champagne-colored short-pile velvet; the lid is lined with similar colored silk with the manufacturer's trademark in the middle. In good to very good condition. The leatherette of the lid shows considerable wear, however the embossed letters M.B.E., abbreviation for Member of the Order of the British Empire, are intact and retain most of their original luster. The box is structurally sound, both hinges are tight and strong, the lid sits perfectly on the bottom part, and the latch is in great working condition.
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of chivalry, instituted in 1917 by King George V, and awarded for distinguished
service to the government in a wide range of useful activities. The order was established in five classes, and had the Military and Civil
Division, the visual distinction of the military division being the red stripe running down the middle of the ribbon. In 1936, the design was
updated, replacing the image of Britannia with the profiles of the king and queen.
