Guards Badge, by the MPS factory, circa late 1940s - early 50s.
Brass, enamels; 43.6 x 36.3 mm. One of the earliest post-war issues made by the ShMZ / MPS (formerly NKPS) Factory. The flag is of the shape distinctly different from the later variations. In very fine condition. The banner has a small chip in its upper right corner and another chip not penetrating to the brass at the upper edge in the central portion, as well as some tiny contact marks. The red star shows a minor amount of rubbing and tiny contact marks. The white enamel is essentially perfect. The enamel shows a beautiful luster throughout.
The details of the wreath are exceptionally well-preserved and crisp, practically pristine. The finial of the banner is not bent as is often the case. The screw post is full length, approx. 11.5 mm, and includes original early screw plate in bronze-plated steel maker-marked "ShMZ-d MPS".
To summarize, despite some flaws this is an attractive and distinctive early Cold War piece.
