The Order of the Sacred Crown, aka Golden Crown, Precious Crown, or Crown of Japan, was established by Emperor Meiji's Edict of 4 January 1888, and is considered equal in rank to the Order of the Rising Sun. It is bestowed on women only, and in higher classes was conferred only on royalty and nobility with rare exceptions. The lower classes are used as an order of merit but are seldom awarded.
