The breast star is in silver gilt and enamels, with red glass center medallion representing the sun of the national flag, measures 91.2 mm in diameter and weighs 119.1 g. The silver reverse shows four screw heads and the characters meaning "Order of Merit Decoration" arranged in a square. In excellent condition. No wear visible to the naked eye on the obverse; the reverse shows a few minor spots of discoloration to the silver.

The badge, worn on a neck ribbon, is in gilded silver, enamels and glass, 86.9 mm in length (incl. suspension crest and eyelet), 55.7 mm in width, and weighs 63.9 g (incl. suspension crest). Suspended on a paulownia crest of green leaves and purple flowers, veined on the obverse and inscribed on the reverse with characters meaning "order of merit decoration". The paulownia crest is suspended from a silver loop through which the neck ribbon is threaded. The neck ribbon is in white moiré silk, 36 mm wide with 5 mm red edges. In excellent condition: no catches to the silk, and just a bit of verdigris next to the buckle, mostly on the inside but a little of it is visible on the outside - insignificant, barely noticeable, and not detractive.
The lapel pin is 11.8 mm in diameter. In excellent condition, no wear visible to the naked eye.
The issue case measures approx. 23.5 x 11 x 5 cm, in solid wood with beveled edges and rounded corners, finished in black lacquer. The latch is in white metal. The lid is decorated with inlaid golden paulownia crest and the title in kanji. Inside, the case is lined with purple velvet with two fitted pads for the star and the badge. The pad for the badge can be pulled up, opening into space for the neck ribbon.
The extraordinary set comes in its original cardboard Packaging Box and includes a Booklet with statutory instructions for wearing the order.
The Order of the Rising Sun, the first national decoration of Japan, was established by the Council of State Decree of April 10, 1875. It can
be bestowed on the military and civilians, Japanese and foreign, as a general order or merit.
