The officially recognized author of the song is Leonid Radin (1860 - 1900), a Russian poet, inventor and revolutionary. In 1898, he adapted the melody of the old, early-Napoleonic era, Prussian student song "Slowly Moving Time," a slow waltz, making it an enthusiastic march and writing the lyrics that made it the marching hymn of the Bolshevik revolution. In 1917, Herman Scherhen, the famous German conductor, created the German communist version of the song, "Bruder, zur Sonne, zur Freiheit" ("Brothers, for the Sun, for Freedom"). In 1920s, Hitler's brownshirts re-made it into "Bruder in Zechen und Gruben" ("Brothers in Mines and Pits"). The song completed the circle in DDR where its Communist version of the lyrics was used again.
