Large lithographic print measuring 24" x 17", printed by M. Morozov Chromo-Lithography Workshop, Moscow. The captions under the artwork are a quote from the 16 September [29 September by Gregorian calendar], 1914 issue of "The Early Morning" newspaper. The captions under the lithograph read "The Details of the Battles at Druskininkai and Osowiec.Christiania. The German troops went on the offensive on the Russian front by two groups of significant size supported by heavy artillery. One of them operated on the line of Sopotzkin - Druskininkai, the other attacked toward Osowiec. The northern group was in desperate offensive action on the Neman, and the attempt to cross this river was indeed the beginning of the unfolding German plan to advance toward Vilno - Kovno. These preparatory operations of high significance had the goal of covering the attack of the second group which was advancing to the south. After bloody and desperate battles, the Germans suffered huge losses and were forced to retreat."

In very good to excellent condition. The rip to the right margin has been repaired and reinforced with acid-free library tape, and is practically invisible on the obverse. Minot fraying and tears to the bottom margin are far from the captions and are easily repairable, if desired. The colors are vibrant, the colors overlay is precise, the text of the captions is crisp and perfectly legible.

The poster is an attempt to "put lipstick on a pig" and boost Russian morale after the disastrous Battle of Tannenberg (23-30 August 1914), which resulted in almost complete destruction of the Russian 2nd Army, and a series of follow-up battles at the Masurian Lakes which led to ousting of Gen. von Renenkampf's 1st Army from East Prussia. Fighting erupted on 12 September [25 Sep. by Gregorian calendar] as the German 8th Army attacked the Osowiec fortress while other units attempted attacks on Druskininkai. The fighting lasted three days, yielding no significant benefit for the Germans. The Russians leveraged their defensive success and launched a counteroffensive on 15 September [28 Sep. Gregorian], one day before the article in "The Early Morning", quoted in this poster.
