The size is 6 ¼" x 4 ½", postally unused, shows two special-issue postal stamps depicting the Mikhail Somov and an oval medallion with the profile and years of life of Hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Somov, a renowned Soviet oceanographer, polar explorer, head of the first Soviet Antarctic Expedition. The main focus of his scientific explorations was studying the behavior of drifting ice. The stamps are cancelled with a First Day cancellation stamp dated 10 October 1986.
