Formed in December 1941, the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division replaced the original 16th Rifle that had been stationed in the Soviet-occupied Baltic area prior to the German invasion and was annihilated in the disastrous Soviet evacuation of Tallinn in August 1941. The new division was conceived as one of Soviet "national" units, and from its inception anywhere from third to half of its enlisted and officer personnel were Lithuanian nationals; their share would increase as the war went on. Some of those were former members of the Lithuanian armed forces prior to the Soviet occupation, while the others were Lithuanian refugees of Jewish ethnicity - hence the division was unofficially known in the Soviet army as the "Jewish" division. Not surprisingly, the division was deployed in fighting in Lithuania and then East Prussia during the last year of the war in Europe as a part of the 1st and later, 2nd Baltic Front.
