The medallion is in brass; 36.8 mm in height incl. eyelet, 32.1 mm wide; weighs 15.8 g not including the suspension and connecting link. The rounded eyelet and the main portion of the medallion are struck as a single piece.
In excellent, near mint condition. The raised details are perfect and crisp. There are only a few minuscule dings to the edge that are practically unnoticeable to the naked eye; the medal is otherwise completely free of any wear that could be found even under a 10x magnification. The finish is exceptionally bright and spotless on both sides. Comes on a late-Soviet era aluminum suspension with a lightly worn, perfectly preserved old ribbon. The connecting link appears to be of the period; its ends are still joined with solder.
This medal is one of the post-war issues that were typically awarded by a Voenkomat (Military Commissariat) at the veteran's place of
residence. The reasons for the late issue could vary, but in most instances, the "Voenkomat" medals were "catch-up" awards to people who took
part in the battle and then somehow got overlooked by the awarding authorities during WW2 and in the immediate post-war years. From our
experience, Variation 2 "Voenkomat" issues of the Stalingrad Medal are much more scarce than the WW2 Variation 1.
