In outstanding, excellent condition. The raised details on both sides of the medallion are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The obverse is completely free of any wear visible to the naked eye; on the reverse, there are only a few minuscule contact marks that are barely noticeable. Both sides of the medallion are completely free from dings, significant scratches, edge knocks or any other flaws. The toning to the brass is even and attractive throughout, free of blemishes or oxidation spots; the original "gilt" mint luster is clearly visible in recessed areas on both sides. There is a peculiar "tiger stripe" pattern on the reverse which appears occasionally on the early Soviet campaign medals; it is believed to be a manufacturing flaw that occurred when workers of the mint "cut corners" to speed up production - not a result of age and wear.

The medal comes on an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. The ribbon is old but well-preserved and sound, showing only a mild wear at the edges that does not detract. Note that it is wrapped "in reverse" as is often the case. On the back, there are leftovers of black thread apparently used by the original recipients to secure the ends of the ribbon in place - a nice personal touch. The connecting link appears to be original; its ends are still joined with solder.

Overall, this is a truly outstanding specimen of the Stalingrad Medal, completely free of flaws while showing a great deal of character. It is certainly one of the best examples we've offered in recent years.
