Soviet Badges, Volume 2: Law Enforcement Agencies , by Igor Sysolyatin, C 2020, Moscow, Russian text, 347 pages, hardcover, large 8½ " x 12" x 1" format, deluxe quality paper and cover.

This book is the second in the series of books about Soviet badges by one of the authors of the 2012 reference guide Awards of Soviet Republics that had already become a "collector's bible". Just like the latter, Sysolyatin's catalog of Soviet law enforcement badges is by far the best reference on the subject published to date. It includes high-quality photos of well over 400 badges plus a great number of award documents, related honorary certificates and photo IDs. Most of the items are from the author's own collection. All of them have an estimated current market value in rubles. All have a brief description and are accompanied by very detailed historical background information.

The book deals with all areas of Soviet law enforcement and its subsidiaries: Police, State Security, Border Guards, Office of Public Prosecution, Fire Department, and award badges issued for labor projects supervised by law enforcement. It also has a large chapter on badges of police and KGB schools, a subject poorly covered in all previously published literature. The emphasis of the book is on early, pre-WW2 badges of NKVD and OGPU, but the more recent issues are very well represented as well.

This superb reference guide can be an invaluable tool for the collector of Soviet law enforcement badges.
