Federal Protective Service known by its Russian acronym FSO (ФСО, for Федеральная Служба Охраны) was originally the 9th Main Directorate of KGB. It was reorganized into a separate agency during the breakup of the Soviet State Security in late 1991 following the unsuccessful coup against Gorbachev and just before the collapse of the USSR. Initially, the agency was called GUO (Main Protective Directorate); in 1996, it was reorganized into FSO which remains its current name. Among other divisions, it now includes Presidential Security Service and Kremlin Regiment. The FSO length of service medals were established in 1997 and are apparently being awarded to these days.
