Brass, enamels; measures 38.6 mm in height incl. the flagpole finial, 26.6 mm in width; weighs 14.6 without the screw plate. Relatively early variation, featuring well defined relief to the central oval portion of the badge. The screw post is approx. 3.5 mm in diameter.

In excellent condition, outstanding for any award of the "Railway Proficiency" series let alone the scarce Excellent Signal Man. The enamel is essentially perfect: it shows beautiful luster and is completely free of chips, flaking, rubbing or any wear noticeable to the naked eye. There are only a few microscopic contact marks invisible without magnification. The details of the artwork and wreath are likewise perfect and crisp; most of the gilt finish on the wreath and dark silver finish on the oval border is well preserved. A good amount of the silver finish on the reverse of the badge is still present. The screw post measures over 13 mm long, has not been reduced. Comes with original WW2 era screw plate maker marked "NKPS Sh.M. Z" (Narkomat of Railroad Transportation, Mechanical Stamping Factory").

This badge is by far the hardest to find of the Railway Proficiency Series of 1943-57.
