Currently an autonomous republic within Russian Federation, Bashkiria is located in the area west of the Ural Mountains, roughly at the dividing line between Europe and Asia. The territory had been concurred by Russia by the mid-XVII C., but this was followed by several large-scale rebellions against Russian rule over the course of the following two hundred years, at least one of them unfolding into a full-out war that significantly slowed down Russian conquest of Central Asia. Later, Bashkirs comprised a significant part of the irregular cavalry in the Imperial Russian army and played a noticeable role in the final year of the Sixth Coalition's war against Napoleon leading up to the capture of Paris.
