60th Anniversary of KGB Special Departments, commemorative badge, 1978.

60th Anniversary of KGB Special Departments, commemorative badge, 1978.

Aluminum, paint, lacquer, 45.2 x 24.0 mm. In excellent condition; shows practically no wear to the fragile lacquer.

The Special Departments of Military Counterintelligence were organized in December 1918, just a year after the Cheka. Throughout much of Soviet history, the primary purpose of these state security units was to prevent a possible military coup or mutiny within the Soviet armed forces. Unlike the other KGB branches, its employees wore a regular military uniform - even though they were usually subordinate to state security, not military chain of command. This changed temporarily only during the Patriotic War when the Special Departments were renamed SMERSH (Russian acronym for Smert' Shpionam or "Death to the Spies").

Unlike the myriad fake "Special Department Employee" badges available on the market, this is an original, officially awarded piece. There is some controversy as to its purpose. Special Departments were a very secretive branch of State Security, and its employees typically would not reveal their affiliation with a KGB "watchdog" unit in any way. In all likelihood, the badge was awarded to the retired veterans of the Special Departments who had reached a point when they no longer needed to keep this aspect of their prior service a secret. There is also a possibility that the badge was issued to active duty employees who attended the celebratory meetings marking the anniversary, in which case the badge was supposed to be kept at home or at work as a token, not to be worn.
