The title of People's Artist of Moldavian SSR was instituted on 14 March 1941, just three and a half months before Moldavia was overrun by the Germans and their Romanian allies in the opening stage of the Operation Barbarossa. The title was bestowed for the first time only in 1949; a year later it was awarded to soon to become world famous choreographer Igor Moiseyev. The medal was established and manufactured much later, apparently during the 70s, and at that time back-issued to all surviving holders of the title. Although the exact number of issues is currently unknown, it must have been very small, probably under 50 (which makes sense considering the relatively small population of this Soviet republic.)
