Brass gilt, measures 35 mm wide. The raised inscription encircling the obverse reads "For Outstanding Service in the Border Troops of the GDR". On the reverse, the inscription encircling the GDR state emblem reads "For Protection of the Workers' and Peasants' Power." The presentation case has black plastic bottom lined with light foam rubber inside, the lid is in Plexiglas.
The medal is in superb condition, no wear to the medallion visible to the naked eye. The ribbon on the suspension and ribbon bar is perfectly clean; both pin attachments are fully functional. The lid of the box

The medal (original name "Verdienstmedaille der Grenztruppen der DDR") was established on 25 October 1977 in 3 classes: bronze, silver, and gold. It was awarded for outstanding achievements and personal dedication in maintaining the security of the borders of the GDR. Also for political and military leadership as well as for education and training.
