The article on the verso explains what is depicted on the obverse. The artwork is an offset print of the painting by V. Pechatin, illustrating the events of August 1942 when the German army was on the offensive to capture Novorossiysk, the port and main base of the Black Sea Fleet. Ships of the Black Sea Fleet used their big guns on the German front positions, assisting the Red Army in its defense of the city.
