The medal comes on original suspension device with a fully functional pin and scarce original ribbon - very uncommon to find, as most Afghan medal recipients wore a traditional generic ribbon instead (the one with red, black and green stripes). The ribbon shows a minor amount of wear and soiling but is overall well-preserved and attractive.
Soviet-made like nearly all Afghan awards of the Communist period, this medal is similar in design and significance to the Soviet Medal for Combat Service (aka Medal for Military Merit). It was awarded to military servicemen for actions that involved severe life-threatening risk and contributed to the success of combat operations.
